Obituary Donald Bannister

June 9, 1920-June 29, 2006

Donald Bannister, 86, of Huron, SD, and formerly of ND, died Thursday, June 29, at the Huron Nursing Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the American Lutheran Church, Huron. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at the Salem Cemetery near Bottineau, ND, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at the Kuhler Funeral Home, Huron, and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald Bannister was born June 9, 1920, at Wolf Point, MT, to Frank and Selma (Johnson) Bannister. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Tower City, ND, and also lived in Abercrombie, Verona and Fargo. Don graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1937, andattended college in Fargo at North Dakota State University. He graduated from N.D.S.U. in 1941, with a degree in Soil Science.

Don worked as a chemist from 1941-1943, with the Trojan Powder Co. in the production of high explosives in Sandusky, OH. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps from 1943 until 1946, wherehe worked with electronics. In 1946, he began his career with the U. S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, at the Bottineau office until 1950, and as a soil scientist in Rugby from 1950 to 1960.

Don married ThelmaHagen Feb.7, 1948, at Bismarck. He then worked at S.C.S. as a soil scientist inDevils Lake until 1962, when they moved to Huron. (Thelma worked as an administrative assistant at Bottineau for several years.) In Huron, Don was employed as the assistant state soil scientist until 1971, when he was promoted to the position of state soil scientist. He retired from S.C.S. in 1976. Don became a Certified Professional Soil Scientist in 1978, and continued to work as a consultant soil scientist until his retirement in 1991.

Don was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America, and the Professional Soil Classifiers Association of South Dakota. Hewas also a member of the Bottineau Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite in Bismarck, the James Valley Shrine Club in Huron, the Royal Order of Jesters and the Yelduz Shrine in Aberdeen, the Yelduz Shrine Band and the Yelduz Shrine Dance Band.He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks in Huron, and had also directed a men?s chorus in Huron.

He is survived by a sister, Evelyn Sholts, of Minneapolis, MN; a brother-in-law and his wife, Clarence and Mary Ann Hagen, of Dunseith, ND; and a special friend, Gertrude Anderson of Huron.

He waspreceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma, Aug. 28, 1986; and one sister, Mabel Parkman.
