!NAME: Ludwig Richter, changed to Walter Sanders for unknown reasons at the time that he came to America.

Walter's real name was Ludwig Richter. It is not clear just how he came to be Walter Sanders. My mother recalls that he left home as a teenager (16 or 17) to seek his fortune in the world. It may have been purely by chance that he arrived in New York. She recalls that he worked in the coal mines in England and traveled in the Mediterranean as a shiphand, visiting Italy.

He found his way to Schenectady where there was a German speaking community and found employment with General Electric, first on the assembly line and soon worked his way into higher positions. As Johann Harke also was employed with GE, it is logical to conclude that this is how he met Bertha. At some point he left GE and went into business as a middleman placing orders with factories for buyers. It is not know if the American action in WW1 had anything to do with this, but his German citizenship certainly must have complicated matters. In the 30's he had an office in New York City with a home in Sewaren, NJ. Around 1942, they moved to Marlborough, New Hampshire. During this period, he was a broker in the textile industry (woven labels).

There seems to be a discrepancy in Walter's birthdate. It is thought that he was born in 1894, but the church records for his marriage indicate that he may have been born in 1890 or 1891. Records at Ellis Island indicate that he was born about 1892. The manifest also indicates that he was deported when when arriving as a stowaway aboard the SS Cincinnati in February of 1911.

Duisburg is located about 15 miles north of Düsseldorf, Germany.
