Richard studiert nach Absolvierung des Egerer gymnasiums medizin in Innsbruck und war in der Burschenschaft teutonia aktiv. Nach Assistentenjahren in Innsbruck und Prag wurde er Primarius des Krankenhauses in Gablonz a.N. und später in Reichenberg. Er hat sich den Ruf eines der führenden Operateure des Sudetenlandes erworben.
Das Jahr 1945 brachte ihm und seiner Familie schwere körperliche und seelische Not. Lange zeit hindurch wurde er von den Tschechen gefangen gehalten, Ende 1946 konnte er nach Bayern emigrieren und machte sich in München sesshaft.
