Death location also reported as Clayton, St. Louis, Missouri Occupation - Merchant [Mathews2.FBK.FTW] He emigrated to the U.S. with his brother Adoph in September, 1870 and arrived
in New York on October 17, 1870. Arrived in America with his brother in 1860 (conflicting family reports 1870),
establishing the trade he had learned in Germany - cabinetmaking. He met his
wife to be in Texas while surveying in the Austin area (She was his cousin) After marrying, he returned to Creve Coeur and established the first United
States Post Office in the area. He became President of his own company "The
H.M. Koch Mercantile Company" of Creve Coeur, i.e. the Creve Coeur Inn and
General Store, an original settlement of Creve Coeur which also served as a
stagecoach stop for traders. The store was later sold to the Dierberg family who still use a picture in some
of their advertisments. While attempting to cut a tree limb, the branch broke and he died from his
