GCRA NEWSLETTER Volume 17, Number 2 P 51-58 1804-1805 Emigrants to Russia from Markgroeningen Amt, Wue. Contributed by Thomas A. Stangl [Source: FHL #550,796] Johann Jakob Gaupp, later Gaub (*ca 1774; son of Johann Adam Gaupp, from Beutelspach, Wti; +1849? Glk), married in Markgroningen on 26.7.1797 to Johanna Eberhardina Laux (*24.6.1773 Markgr., daughter of Georg Friedrich Laux [see #11] and Johanna Elisabetha Speidel). Johanna Eberhardina is reported by StumppKE to have died in Galatz in 1804. Another source (Die Auswandemng aus Markgroningen, Herman Romer, FHL #897,295) indicates that she died there in November 1804. However, the author is of the opinion that this date is not possible. It is clear from the birth of her last known child that the Gaupp family did not leave Markgroningen until after 9.11.1804. It was physically impossible to travel to Ulm and down the Danube to Galatz in less than 20 days in 1804, 30-40 days was more likely. Also, StumppKE has garbled the information about Johann Jakob Gaupp's two wives in 1816 GRL:55. He remarried ca 1804, in Odessa City?, to Johanna Katharina Stauss (* 11.6.1785 Markgr., daughter of Ludwig Stauss - see #16; +4.10.1847 Glk, married), who is labeled in 1816 GRL:55 as "Johanna Eberhardina 29 (geb. Laux, *24.6.1773) 1804 in Galatz gestorben" - it is obvious that an error occurred either during the translation of the Revision List or the editing process for the StumppKE book. The two sons who emigrated were Johann Friedrich Gaupp (*31.10.1797, survived) and Jacob Heinrich Gaupp (*9.11.1804, probably died en route). Johann Jacob Gaub Sr appears in the Glueckstal 1828 Name List as a landed household #75, 4 males, 4 females.
