The only three ties I have found to Hieronimus as head of this family is the birth of his first daughter Catherine in 1762 [Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Holland, Lancaster Co. PA, Hieronimus/Rosina Gieg, daughter Maria Catharina b. 4/4/1762, baptized 5/9/1762], his presence with the rest of the family on the 1754 arrival in America, and the mention of Hieronimus in Adam, b. 1706, will of 1783 indicating he is an adopted son. The exact wording of the will is, "And further it is my will and I allow this what Hironimus Gieg [born 12/12/1734] and Ludwig Gieg [Johann Ludwig born 5/22/1747] had before this time that I will bestow unto them in their fathers name and they shall after my death have an equal share with any other children out of my estate." I have a very strong suspicion that Hieronimus used a first name of Henry or John, but other than the birth of his first daughter Catherine, the trip to America, and the will, I have found no records of him of any kind. It is possible he was not a land owner and lived with Adam, b 1706, and his second wife Elizabeth (Dropp) in Brecknock Township until his death. Hieronimus' family first appears in Elizabeth Twp. of Lancaster Co. PA, about 10 miles from Caernarvon Twp., in 1790. His wife Rosina married Mathias Buffenmoyer in 1795 and according to the marriage record she was a widow. Rosina lists the names of their children in her will of 1807, and Mathias Buffenmoyer lists the names of his children in his will of 1805; they are not the same children. There is some confusion among family researchers about this family including myself. I had originally assumed that Balthasar Keith, b. 1733, son of Adam, b. 1706, and step-brother of Hieronimus moved from York Co. PA to Elizabeth Co. PA between 1785 and 1789. I now believe that Balthasar was likely in Morgan Co. VA (now WV) from 1785 to 1795, then, went to Huntingdon Co. PA in 1796. There are three reasons, however, that Balthasar, b. 1733, is not the father of this family; (1) Balthasar's wife was named Catherine, not Rosina, (2) Balthasar was alive and well (the marriage record for Rosina indicates she was a widow in 1795 when she married Mathias Buffenmoyer) in the Federal Census for 1800 and 1810 in Huntingdon Co. PA living with a woman of similar age, therefore assuming this was his wife Catharine, (3) the 1783 tax list for York Co. PA for Balthasar showed a household of 5 members, not 10, which would be the required size of this family. Hieronimus' son Balthasar was likely named for Hieronimus' step brother. 1790 PA>Lancaster>Elizabeth Balzer Keith 3 1 1 This census household for 1790 would be Balzer, Peter, and Jacob, over 16, Michael, 16 and under, and the widowed mother Rosina. The remaining children were living in their own households. Q: Bob Keith, Rootsweb
