She was reared in a humble and industrious home. where she had the love and shelter of good parents. She too, had little education. When she was a young girl she was sent to other homes to help women with their work and their children. As Mary Ann grew up, there was much work for her to do around her own home as well as helping others. Mary was modest and shy and very timid and retiring in public, but at home she was jovial and happy. She would always sing or hum as she went about her work. One day while she was chopping wood, a splinter flipped up and hit her in the right eye. For the rest of her life she was blind in that eye. She was a beautiful young woman and much sought after byeligible young men. Mary Ann was a sensitive person and to her, Robert's words were law. She never crossed him in any of his decisions.
