Mit der Entwicklung Hiltrups untrennbar verbunden ist Konsul August Bernhard Schencking, der auf Gut Hülsebrock lebte und weltweite Beziehungen pflegte. Er erreichte durch zähes Verhandeln, dass der Kanal in seinem Verlauf den "Hiltruper Bogen" nahm, ordnete die Verlegung des Bahnhofs in die Ortsmitte an und kümmerte sich um die Verbesserung der Straßenverhältnisse auf der heutigen Marktallee.
