"Frederick W. Straus was born in Laufersweiler, Germany, February 28,1833 and came to this country at the age of sixteen (1849). He settled in Ligonier, Ind., where he was for many years engaged in mercantilelines and organized the first Jewish congretation there, being its president for thirty years. He ame to Chicago in 1883. Here he embarkedin the mortgage loan business, in which he was eminently successful.He was a member of Sinai Temple and was widely active in communal interests. Madelon Goldsmith became his wife, and nine children were bornto them. He died February 9, 1898, leaving an honored name and his business, one of the foremost of its kidn, now conducted by his sons, known as S. W. Straus & Co."
