On an unknown date Alvin moved to the vicinity of Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, where he died and was buried there in the Bloomer Cemetery. His military style gravestone is inscribed "Alvin Raymond Co. K 3 Minn Inf." Alvin was a Civil War veteran of Company K, 3rd Minnesota Infantry. He enlisted February 23, 1864 at Eyota, Olmsted County, Minnesota, to serve three years as a Private in Company K of the 3rd Minnesota Infantry. On February 24, 1864 he was mustered into Federal service with Company K at Rochester, Minnesota. At that time he received $60.00 of his $300.00 enlistment bounty and was listed as a 27 years old, 5'9" tall farmer with sandy hair, blue eyes and a sandy complexion born in the state of New York. His enlistment was credited to the 1st Congressional District of Minnesota. On July 13, 1864 Alvin was found guilty of failing to appear for inspection at the Company K Parade Ground on July 10, 1864 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas and fined $2.00 of his monthly pay by the Court Martial. On the muster roll of Jan./Feb., 1865 it was noted that he was on detached service with the Pioneer Corps since February 1, 1865. On June 19, 1865 he was admitted to Hospital Number 1. On his admission card it was noted that he was married and from Eyota, Minnesota. It was also noted that he was a Private with Company K and with the Pioneer Corps. On June 22, 1865 Alvin was mustered out of Federal service at Devall's Bluff, Arkansas on an Individual Muster Out Roll having served 1 year, 3 months and 28 days of Federal service.
