He was born in Hoechst, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and came to the United States in 1842 with the family of his parents, Peter and Christina Schnellbacher. Mary's mother was also born in Germany and came to the United States with her parents, Gottfried and Frederika Meyer, in 1841.In about 1855 Mary's father was assigned to start a new church in Madison County, Iowa which was just being settled at that time. Mary grew up in Madison County and married George Koch there on August 12, 1870. They lived on several different farms in Madison County and later lived in Dexter, Dallas County, Iowa where George was a blacksmith. Mary and George were divorced in 1901 and Mary lived in Ames, Iowafor a few years. On June 2, 1904 she married John H. Gentry in Des Moines - and they moved to Milton, Oregon, where they were primarily fruit growers. John died in July 1920 in Walla Walla, Washington, justacross the state line from Milton.
