Defeated by Karl Stefan</p><p><p>Was a member of Freemasons.</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>NEBRASKA AND THEIR PEOPLE a history of Dodge and Washington Counties</p></p><p><p>Published by the American HistoricalSociety in Chicago 1921</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>JOHN HAVEKOST - Enterprising and progressive and possessing good business talent and tact, John Havekost, of Hooper Township, holds a noteworthy position among the more successful farmers and stock growers of this part of Dodge County, his large and well-kept farm bearing visible evidence to the most casual observer of the owner's thrift and industry. A native of Dodge County, he was born, July 30, 1872, in Logan Township of German lineage.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Herman Havekost, his father was born, bred and married in Germany. In 1866, with his wife, Margaretta, he came to the United States, the land of promise, and for two years lived in Newton Iowa, where he followed the carpenter's trade. Then with himself, family and household goods packed into two covered wagons, he drove, in typical pioneer style, to Dodge County, Nebraska, camping and cooking by the wayside. Taking up a homestead claim in Logan Township, he first used as adwelling place one of the wagons in which he had journeyed, and with the small means he had at his command began the improving of his land. By means of sturdy labor, he met with desired results in his undertakings, and by future investments became owner of 401 acres of land at the time of his death, which occurred at the age of seventy-eight years and eleven months. He was very well-to-do, hisentire property having been acquired through his own efforts. His widow, now well advanced in years still occupies the old homestead.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>The fifth child in a family of eleven children, John Havekost began doing the chores incidental to farm life in a new country as a boy, obtaining a practical knowledge of the rudiments of farming when young. In 1895, soon after attaining hismajority, he bought land in Cedar County, and was there engaged in tilling the soil for fourteen years. Returning to Dodge County in 1909, he purchased his present place of 360 acres of land in Hooper Township, and in its improvement has spared neither time nor expense. Using excellent judgment in his work, he has placed his land in good condition, and each year adds to its value and attractiveness, his improvements and equipments being up-to-date in all respects. In addition to carrying on general farming successfully, Mr Havekost raises Duroc Jersey hogs and feeds cattle on a somewhat extensive scale.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Mr Havekost married in 1895, Gesina Suhr, a daughter of Herman Suhr. Mr Suhr immigrated to the United States with his family in 1884, locating in Dodge County, Nebraska, where he was engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death, at the age of fifty-nine years. Eight children have been born of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Havekost, namely; Mrs Bertha Olteman [Otteman], of Dodge County; Mrs. Olga Wurdeman of Dodge County; Mrs Alma Moeller, also a resident of Dodge County; Alvin, Harland [Harlan], Bernard, Gerald and Woodrow. Politically, Mr Havekost casts his vote without regard to party lines and though not an office seeker has served as a member of the local school board a number of terms. Religiously, he and his wife are active members of the Lutheran Church. He is a member and the president of the Farmers Elevator Company of Hooper, and a member and director of the state organization of the Farmer's Union.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>HOOPER SENTINEL April 27, 1950</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>John Havekost, 77, former state treasurer and legislator, died at his home in Hooper Thursday morning after an illness of about two years. The body layin state fro 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Wollmer-Warnne</p><p><p>Funeral Home, and the funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran church with Rev. Paul Moessner officiating. - -- Interment was in the Hooper Cemetery.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>The services were attended by a large number of friends and relatives who came to pay their final respects to one of Hooper's esteemed citizens. - - -</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>John Havekost was born on the Havekost homestead north of Hooper on July 30, 1872, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Havekost. As a child he was presented to the Lord in Holy Baptism and confirmed in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church. His early years were all spent in the Hooper area.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>In 1895 he was married to Gesina Suhr and the young couple moved to Cedar County where they farmed for the next 14 years. In 1909 the family moved back to Hooper to the farm south of town, where they lived until 1942, when they retired and moved to Hooper.Nine children came to gladden the parents' hearts.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>After returning to the Hooper area, Mr Havekost became a member of Zion church. He was very active, serving on the councilfor a number of terms. It was while he was on the council, that the congregation raised the church and put a basement under it</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Besides being an active and progressive farmer, Me Havekost took a most active part in civic and community affairs. He was a director of the First National Bank of Hooper for 34 years. He served as president of the Farmers Mutual Home Insurance Cofor many years. The activities of the Farmers Union and Farm Bureau demanded much of his time, and he held many offices.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>In 1927 Mr. Havekost was honored for the first time byrepresenting this district in the state legislature at Lincoln. For ten years he served as lawmaker and in 1939 he received the highest honor of being appointed treasurer of the state of Nebraska, which position he filled until 1941. Mr Havekost also served his church in its synodical obligations. For several terms he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Midland College. He served on special committees of Synod in addition to being congregational delegate to Synod.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>In 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Havekost were given the privilege of celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Last summer Mr. Havekost suffered a severe heart attack. He had seemingly begun to recover when it became apparent that he was losing his strength. After a long and gradual weakening of his body, he passed from this life on Thursday morning. He would have been 78 in July</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>He is survived and mourned by seven children, - - -</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, in 1948, a son, George, and a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Otteman.</p><p></p>
