Elsie Carstensen

Elsie Irene Carstensen was born October 26, 1915, the daughter of Peter W. and Hulda Brockman Petersen. She died at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday, March 23, 2000 at the age of eighty-four.

Elsie was born in Hanover Township, Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ on February 8, 1916 at her parent's home by Rev. Runge and later confirmed in 1928 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig by Pastor Firnhaber.

On December 19, 1935, Elsie was united in marriage to Freddie Schroeder. The couple were blessed with the birth of two children, Elaine and Wayne. Freddie died on March 12, 1944. Elsie was united in marriage to Friedrich Carstensen on February 25, 1949 in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Friedrich Wiese. This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Jens and Janice.

Elsie was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed socializing with friends with a cup of coffee, playing cards and visiting on the telephone. She also enjoyed baking and painting pillow cases and towels. Elsie was a devoted friend who as her friends knew 'she worried about everyone'.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Freddie, her husband, Friedrich, one daughter, Elaine; two brothers, C. Henry and Bernhard Petersen. Survivors include two sons, Wayne Schroeder and his wife, Carolyn of Ida Grove; Jens Carstensen of Sioux City; one daughter, Janice Nemitz and her husband, David of Denison; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Emil Petersen and his wife, Lillie of Schleswig and Jurgen Petersen of Denison; one sister-in-law, Inge Carstensen of Ida Grove; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2000 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Sharon Thompson provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen as he sang, 'Rock of Ages' and for congregational hymns, 'What a Friend We Have In Jesus' and 'Lift High the Cross'. Those serving as pallbearers were Daniel Schroeder, Dean Schroeder, Gaylord Boeck, Timothy Stoppel, Darryl Petersen and Alan Nemitz. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.
