Notes for this person
- According to her obituary her birth date was 24 Feb 1837 and her
marriage date was 24 Dec 1858.
- "19 Aug 1910 -- MRS. LUCY JANE SPURLING-- It is the sad duty
of the NEWS to this week chronicle the death of another good woman--
Mrs. Lucy Jane Spurling, who died at the home of her son-in-law, W.F.
Jones, in Higbee, on Thursday, August 11, 1910, of general debility,
aged 73 years.
Since moving to town from the farm about a year ago, Mrs. Spurling
had been in failing health, on which account she and her aged husband
made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Jones instead of occupying the
residence they purchased. Mrs. Spurling was the only daughter of
Stephen and Margaret Brockmn, and was born Feb. 24, 1837. On
December 24, 1858, she was married to A.T. Spurling. They were the
parents of eight children, six of whom survive, viz: W.H., Mary W., and
W.E. Spurling, and Mrs W.F. Jones, Mrs Orpha Edwards and Mrs.
Maggie Hardin.
Mrs. Spurling was a devout Christian woman and had been a consistent
member of the Methodist church for over 60 years. Funeral services
were conducted at the Methodist church the day following her death by
the Rev. J.D.F. Houck, and the large assemblage of sorrowing friends
spoke more eloquently than words of esteem in which she was held.
Interment was made in the Hamilton burying ground east of town. Besides
her husband and children, she is survived by four brothers--Wesley, Jas. W.,
Con J. and Thos. Brockman.
To the aged husband, who was 78 years old the day preceding the death
of his life partner, and the sorrowing family the NEWS extends its warmest
sympathy."
