Rodman, Sr., was the third child of seven of John Rodman and Angeline Rodman (nee Williams). Sam lived his life and died in Jackson County, IL. His obituary from the "Daily Independent" states, "Sam Rodman was perhaps one of the most generally known men in the city and county. He was part of the life of Murphysboro since its cradle days; and when he expired at the early hour today the word on the streets was that "Sam has gone along." He was a founding member of the First Lutheran Church of Murphysboro and a Third Degree Mason. These lifelong ties to Murphysboro are not surprising, as his father, John, was a verteran of the Illinois 73rd Volunteer Infantry, Company K, during the Civil War. Sam saw his father leave DeSoto on August 5, 1862, and not return until after the war was over in June of 1865. Sam married Catherine "Dollie" Rodman (nee Spangler) on June 5, 1889, and they had four children who lived to adulthood.
