Notes for this person
Aus Find A Grave: John Silas Dechant GEBURT 4 Okt 1883 Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska, USA TOD 5 Juli 1904 (im Alter von 20) Winnetoon, Knox County, Nebraska, USA BESTATTUNG Oak Ridge Cemetery Dannebrog, Howard County, Nebraska, USA GEDENKSTÄTTEN-ID 130969490 The first Omaha-Bonesteel special, which went through Creighton, the morning of July 5th, ran over and killed John Dechant, a young man about 20 or 22 years old. This happened just east of Winnetoon. Dechant was a stepson of A.C. Petersen of Winnetoon and was employed on the Petersen farm as a farm hand. He had been up to Winnetoon, spending the Fourth and had been up all night. When he started home, instead of turning south, where the railway crosses the highway, he kept on down the track towards Creighton and was lying at the west end of the bridge in the Oleson pasture. The train men did not see him until it was too late to stop the heavy train and the winding wheels crushed out his life. It is thought by some that there might have been foul play as there was a couple of suspicious characters begging meals from the farmers near there that morning and inquiry at Winnetoon developed the fact that he had not been drinking any intoxicants. No blame is attached to the railway company or employees. The body of young Dechant was buried at the Winnetoon cemetery, Thursday. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Winnetoon, Rev. Gortner of Creighton preaching the sermon. ...The Creighton News 15 July 1904 ******* His mother was Maren Pedersen. Her first husband was William Perry Dechant, whom she divorced. The Dechant daughter, Clara Louise, was adopted by a Norris family. Maren had been married to Petersen for eight years, when her son was killed. Check his mother's Find A Grave site. Her son, John's name and dates are inscribed on her gravestone.
