He was 77 years old. Howard was born in Omaha, Neb., on March 15, 1938, to Grace and Harold Strenger. He graduated high school in Omaha in 1956. He attended one year of college at the University of Omaha. He was also in the Navy Reserve. He went on to study Engineering at Arizona State University. Howard's career began with Peter Kiewit Company based in Arizona, where he was assigned work projects throughout the United States, including the Minuteman Project in South Dakota. He arrived in Alaska in 1973, working for Burgess Construction in Fairbanks, and then assumed Engineering positions in Anchorage for Veco, Norcon and several Alaska Native Corporations. He then ran his General Contracting business until 2000. In 1994, Howard married Cheryl Pretzel and during their life together he stepped in filling the roles of dad, grandpa, husband, brother, son and great-grandpa to his new extended family. After their retirement in 2000, Howard and Cheryl spent 12 years exploring the country by motorhome. Howard's generous heart produced a life rich in friendships that spanned the decades. Among his many passions, he was an avid golfer, an outdoorsman and gourmet cook. Howard is survived by his wife, Cheryl Strenger; brother, Jim (Dottie) Strenger; children, Jacki Bell, Jason (Shannon) Pretzel, Carmen (Mike) Fink and Dawn Talbert; grandchildren, Nathan Pretzel, Tom Pretzel, Jessica (Brandon) Fisher, Eliana Pretzel, Kyle Talbert, Dylan Talbert and Kelsey Talbert; great-grandchildren, Landon Fisher and Eleanor Fisher; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Harold Strenger; his sister, Catharine Dein; and nephew, John Dein. The family wishes to thank Home Instead for their heartfelt work and dedication, and also a special thank you to Hans with Providence Hospice. A private family service will be held at a later date.
