Notes for this person

Ruth's greatest memory Veröffentlicht 25 Okt 2011 von debjclark1 In her own words: "We moved to Jefferson from Marcus in 1920. I was 14 1/2 years old and a freshman in high school. We lived on an acreage south of town. (Jefferson, Iowa) We had mail deliery on a rural route. The mail carrier had bright red hair. My brother, Irl, and I would see who could get there first to see who could get the mail. Little did that mail carrier ever realize that girl, who came so fast from the house, to beat her brother running from the barn yard, ever be his wife some day. And that girl is your great grandmother's (Ruth) Greatest Memory." ------------------------------------------- The house where I grew up. Veröffentlicht 25 Okt 2011 von debjclark1 Ruth's words: "We lived in a farm house when we lived in Marcus, Iowa where I was born. In 1920 we moved to Jefferson to a house just inside the city limits. Here we had our firstbathroom. What a luxury. This house and acreage Dad later sold to Jongwaard, who built many houses on it." (Note: The street there is name Grauer for the family.) We had a hard coal heater that Dad filled with coal from the top and kept it burning day and night all through the winter. This was in the "parlor." The range or cook stove was kept heating all winter with wood. We had a refrigerator that held a chunk of ice. A pan was kept underneath to catch the water from melting ice. The ice wagon came to replenish the ice. I never had a bedroom or bathroom for myself. I shared the bedroom with my three sisters. We had 2 double beds. Dorothy and Jean in one bed and I had Virginia with me. I helped my mother cook and clean and help with taking care of my sisters. I also helped my Dad with farm chores and working in fields. Irl and I worked together as Dad needed "another boy." If I had a hiding place it was in the attic where I found books to read. I had good report cards. I liked history and geography but didn't care much about arithmetic. I played basketball when in high school. I wore bloomers and middy blouses. The bloomers were very full and came below my knees. I went to country school. After I graduated from 8th grade I went to high school in Marcus, Iowa, for part of my freshman year. Then we moved to Jefferson, Iowa and I graduated from Jefferson High in 1923." ---------------------------------------------- For You, Grandma by Deb Veröffentlicht 25 Okt 2011 von debjclark1 For You, Grandma (11/8/92) Thank you for the things you gave- Your thoughts, your time, your love. I always felt your great support. You were comfortable-like a glove. When I was small it was a treat To stay overnight with you. All of those special days and nights Will stick in my mind like glue. Your cooking was something out of this world. Remember those holiday meals? When I took your cookies back to the dorm- Funny, they always seemed to have wheels! Your house was always a gathering place A really fun place to be. Cousins, laughing, charades, and games. Remember MY climbing tree? You NEVER forgot to send me a card. You ALWAYS remembered my day. Even when it was hard for you to write "Happy Birthday With Love" they'd say. Then came my kids and "Where are the toys?" "You had better go down there and pick!" Is it the pillow, the cars, or the old steel planes? NO! The BEST toy is the egg laying chick! The last few months have been so hard. I lived so far away. But I NEVER forgot what you have done for me. You have molded my life like clay. Through your examples, values, and your love Your light has brightened my road. In my travels through the rest of life May thoughts of you lighten my load. Thank you for the things you gave- Your thoughts, your time, your love. I'll see you soon and give you a hug When I see you in heaven above.
