The blizzard of 1888 was a frequent item of conversation. At that time,

the county was sufficiently organized so that there were public schools,

and Cornelius had attended with his children so that he had become

proficient in reading, writing and figuring. At home when the storm

began to threaten, he hitched up the team and wagon and went to warn the

schoolmaster tomove his children home. They barely managed to make it

home. Some neighbor(older) children, stopped by the storm, survived by

unhitching the team fromthe wagon, overturning the box, and nestling

together underneath in the straw which lined the wagon box.
