From Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County Dr. Francis Schill,sucessful as a physician, popular and well liked as acitizen is the gentleman whose name heads this sketch. He was born in1831, in the Grand Dukedom of Baden, Germany. He received his early education in the schools of his native village andat the age of fifteen years entered the gymnasium of Freidburg, Baden;after completing the course of instruction required there, he became astudent in the medical department of the University of the same place andbegan the syudy of medicene. During his career as a medical student hetwice visited the University of Heidleberg, Germany. but he did notmatriculate there. After passing the State medical examinations in hisnative country he came to America in February, 1864, being induced yotake this step by a friend who was assistant surgeon in the United StateArmy. Dr. Schill, by presnting the necessary papers and passing asatisfactory examination at Columbus, Ohio, received an appointment as aassistant surgeon of the One Hundred and Seventh Regiment , OhioVolunteer Infantry, and embarked for Jacksonville, Florida, in May, 1864.In the fall of this year he was transferred as a post surgeon toFernandina, Florida. Here he remained almost a year, where besides thecare of his own soldiers, he had charge of the hospital at that place,and also gavehis attention to the garrison at Fort Clinch andthe whiteinhabitants of the town. July 3,1865, he left for Charlestown, SouthCarolina, at which place his regiment was stationed then,after joiningGeneral Sherman's Army. They remained here for several weeks, when theywere sent home to Cleveland, Ohio, and after two weeks were mustered outof the service. Induced by his friend, Dr. Schill came to Johnstown August, 1865, whereheopened a office and since that time has been continuously engaged in thepratice of medicene. He is one of the examining surgeons of the United States Pension Board ofJohnstown. For five years he was a member of the Board of Health of thatcity. He has been a member of the Cambria County Medical Society sinceits organization, and for many years has served as Treasure for thatSociety; he is a prominent member of the Medical Society of the State ofPennsylvania, and a member of the American Medical Association. He wasone the incorporators of the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, he is amember of the board of managers of the same and on the medical staff. In 1875 he married Miss Anna Lorentz, ofJohnstown. To this union has beenborn one son, Frank G. R., who is a medical student at Jefferson MedicalCollege, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
