Odonell De Umfreville II d 1182

Lord of Redesdale

Baron of Prudhoe c1166-1182

Seems to have succeeded his father Odinell I (Hedley)sometimebetween1162and 1166 as in 1166 he appears in a document assessinghimforscutage5 inNorthumberland, he appears again in 1171. In 1173 hehadagrant of Ð20 outof the rental of the mines of Carlisle toretainKnightsat Prudhoe onaccount of Scots raiding (Wallace laid seige inthisyear). It is as wellhe was granted this income for in 1174HarbottleCastle wastaken andPrudhoe was again put under seige. Wallaceseems tohave takena dislike toOdonell 'Thus said King William: Then may IbeaccursedExcommunicated bypriest, put to shame and discomfited. If Igivethecastle of Odinel afixed time or respite. But I will cause himwhollytohis joy and delight'Odonell escaped however. He was presentatAlnwickwhen William the Lionwas defeated and captured. Odonell wasgivenÐ1710s out of the bootystolen from him by William. Odonell wasalsograntedElton in Yorkshire forlife as well as the forfeited landsofThomasMuscamp the Baron of Wooler.

After the defeat of the Wallace Odonell made severalalterationstothecastle including a new gatehouse. The mound was levelledand anewstonekeep was erected which after Norham is the oldeststonekeepinNorthumberland. Part of the curtain wall was rebuiltinstone.Aninteresting story relates to this rebuildingwork....'Allhisneighbours, the legend runs, had, either from love orfear, givenhimassistance in the work, except the men of Wylam, apossessionofthemonastery of St Oswin of Tynemouth, which had beenfreedfromallcontributions to castle building by several royalcharters.Neitherthethreats nor the persuasions of the king's officers hadanyeffect.Odinelwas so enraged that he sent for one of them wholived, without fearofGod, in the city of Corbridge, and bade him seizetheproperty oftheWylam peasants and bring it to the castle. This mantookwith himtwoofficers names Richard and Nicholas, and proceeded at oncetoWylam.

According to the English law that had then been long established, afineforneglecting to perform a customary duty like that ofrepairingacastle wasfirst to be levied on the private property of theserfs, andonly in thecase of this proving insufficient was recourse to behadtothe lord'sdemesne. The Corbridge official, however, announcedhisintention of layinghands on whatever first came his way, andit wasinvain that his companionscautioned him not to interfere with theheadofSt. Oswin. They came to thepasture where the demesne oxenweregrazing, but these, together with theruddy youth and his barking dogwhowerelooking after them, were by thepower of St. Oswinmademiraculouslyinvisible and inaudible to thewickeddistrainer'.(Cadwallader Bates)The St 'Oswin' is of course theformerKing ofNorthumbria, Oswiu, whosenumerous body parts were attributedtohavemiraculous powers although inthis case I suspect either briberyorthealehouse to be the morerational explanation. Odonell youwillnoteselects a man who was'without the fear of God' to performtheirksometask of taking monasticproperty while his two companionsimplorehim notto risk the wrath ofthe holy relic, St Owin's head.

Despite Odonell's landholdings his debts on his deathwereverysubstantialbecause of the rebuilding, so much so that somewerestillunpaid on thedeath of his son Robert in 1195.
