From the thirteenth to the sixteenth century theNevilleswereundoubtedlythe most important barons in the County of Durham.Originating from Neville-Seine-MaritimeinFrance,from which they tooktheir name, they came to England at the time of the Norman conquestwhenaHenryde Neville commanded William the Conqueror's fleet. TheNevilles intermarried withapowerfulSaxon family called the Bulmers, tookthe Bull's Head as their emblem and became the LordsofRabyand Brancepeth. At the Battle of Nevilles Cross, near Durham City on 17thOctober1346,RalphNeville of Raby Castle led the English army in theirfamous victory over the Scots andbecamethefirst layman to be allowedburial in Durham Cathedral. His son John Neville, alsoburiedinthecathedral donated the famous Neville Screen for the greatbuilding in 1375. On Nevillesorders, thebeautiful ornamented screen wasshipped to Newcastle in sections and then brought to Durhambycart.Perhapsthe most famous Neville of all, though not directly connected withDurhamwasRichardNeville, the Earl of Warwick, who was known as Warwickthe Kingmaker because of hisinfluenceoverwhether Edward IV or Henry VIwore the English Crown. The power and influence of theNevillesinDurhamcame to a dramatic end in 1569 when the Nevilles, along withtheequallypowerfulPercy family of Alnwick in Northumberland, plotted tooverthrow Queen Elizabeth I in what cametobeknown as the Rising of theNorth.
