Died giving birth to Robert II Stewart.

Marjory Bruce, Princess of Scotland, was the only child ofthe1stmarriageof Robert I, The Bruce. She was born probably inDecember1296,the sameeventful month that Edward I of England, theself-styled'Hammerof theScots', invaded Scotland and laid siege toBerwick.

At the end of June 1306 the 9-year-old princess, togetherwithherstepmother and other women-folk of The Bruce's family, weresentforsafetyto Kildrummy Castle (Aberdeenshire), escorted by NigelBruceandthe Earlof Atholl. It was intended that they would then takerefugeinOrkneyuntil times were easier, but the English army wasalreadyatAberdeen andthe royal ladies moved on to Tain, north ofInverness, stillhoping for aboat. Here they were captured in the sanctuaryof St.Duthacand sent toEdward of England, then at Lanercost PrioryinCumberland. They wereseparated from each other and Marjorie was sent toaconvent, where sheremained until her release 8 years later.

She was not yet eighteen at the time of the battle ofBannockburn,24June1314. One of the heroes of that great victory over theEnglishwashersecond cousin once removed, Walter Stewart, 6th LordHighSteward, somefour years her senior, whom she married in thefollowingyear. Itwas fromthat Stewart cousinship that the typicallyStewart nameofMarjorie firstcame into the family of Bruce, Robert theBruce'smotherand maternalgrandmother both bearing that name. Thislast-namedMarjoriehad been thesecond of the three daughters of Walter,3rd HighSteward.

Part of the wedding dowry which Marjorie Bruce brought toherhusbandwasthe castle and Barony of Bathgate in Midlothian, whichitwasintendedwould become their private family residence; but this wasnottobe.

Whether through rashness, fearlessness or ignoranceofthepossibleconsequences, Princess Marjorie went out ridingnearPaisleywhileheavily pregnant. Her horse, taking fright atsomething, rearedup,Marjorie was thrown violently to the ground andimmediatelywentintopremature labour. Her only child, the future RobertII, wasdeliveredatthe roadside by Caesarean section (the first authenticrecordof suchanoperation being performed since the birth oftheeponymousJuliusCaesar). The beautiful Marjorie died within a fewhours, aged onlyabout19 years and 3 months, on 2 March 1316. Her lastwords arereportedtohave been 'He's a laddie; I ken he's a laddie; he willbeking'.Herimprobable dying prophecy eventually came true, butnotforanotherfifty-five years.
