Hi Ken Ahlf, I am Lowell Salyards in Rochester, NY. However, I was born and grew up in SW Minnesota. I have been doing genealogical research for over 22 years. My maternal grandmother was the daughter of Wilhelm Schroeder and Maria MAU. In scanning the Internet's GENDEX index for Mau, I see you list a Kate Mau who married Arthur H. Ahlf. You have Kate Mau being born on 9 Aug 1885 in Niles Center, WISCONSIN in the GENCIRCLES link. My grandmother was born in 1869 in Niles Center, ILLINOIS. Sometime after that, the name was changed to its present-day name of Skokie which is in Cook County on the north side of Chicago. There was also a Niles, Illinois just a few miles west of Skokie. Perhaps that is why they changed its name to eliminate some confusion. Niles Center/Skokie is located in the middle of Niles Township, Cook County. Hence its name of Niles Center. Maria Mau came at the age of four in 1854 with her parents from Mecklenburg via Hamburg. Her father Johann Mau had been born in Cossebade, Mecklenburg which is inland, sort of south of Rostock located up on the Baltic Sea. Cossebade's Evangelical Lutheran Church parish is nearby Grebbin. I have the microfilms of this parish from the Mormon Family History Library. My Schroeder/Mau marriage/birth/death records are in the St. John's Lutheran Church of Niles as it preceded the church over in Niles Center/Skokie. This is a blessing as the great Chicago fire of October 1871 burned all the Cook County civil records. When I corresponded with a Lutheran Church in Skokie a number of years ago, the pastor responded saying that there were still Mau families in his church. My people were near Kankakee south of Chicago by 1870. Perhaps there is a Niles Center, Wisconsin but I did want to bring to your attention of its possibly being in Illnois. I suspect you are aware that Kate is often a short name for Catherine, or in German, Catharina/Katharina. I am not aware of my Mau ancestors being related to any other Mau's that came to the US. But then, I haven't done any research on that. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Where do you live? Lowell Salyards
