Lafayette, Indiana Journal and Courrier, Sunday, June 15, 2003 Speakeasy concealed by rolling wall By Bob Kriebel, For the Journal and Courier Bob Kriebel Stories about local history sent by readers are stacking up again inthe mailbox and e-mail files. An interesting downtown business story comes from George McKinniss who e-mailed in mid-April: "I was just wondering if anyone remembers the hidden wall at 10 N. Fourth St., in what is now the Gambs andAssociates law office building? "During Prohibition, it was the business ofAlvin Fay, I think." A 1939 business directory listed Alvin Fay as operatorof the Gun Club Tavern nearby at 18 N. Fourth St. "The second floor had a speakeasy," McKinniss goes on. "Loeb`s Department Store acquired the building andhad to install a sprinkler system for insurance purposes. The company that installed the system precut the pipes according to measurements of the lower floor, but when they started to install the second floor, they discovered the pipes weretoo long. Investigation disclosed a wall with rollers which, when opened, exposed a room where illegal liquor had apparently been stored. As an electrician (McKinniss Electric Co.) hired by Loeb`s, I saw the room."
