Christiana Ruth Cheek wasborn on April 19, 1925 in Canon, Georgia and went home to be with the Lord December 30, 2010.
Chris grew up in Seattle from the age of five. As a young womanshe spent her 26th year working in Honolulu. On her return to Seattle, her brother Robert Cheek introduced her to to his wife Shirley's brother Lowell DeWitt Welty. They were married in 1953 in Corsicana, Texas near Lowell's Air Force Basein Wichita Falls. The couple moved to California and raised their four childrenin a house Lowell and Chris built along the 14th fairway of Pasatiempo Golf Course. Chris lived in Santa Cruz for 55 of her 85 years.
Over the years Chris and Lowell opened their house and hearts to numerous young people, some of them relatives, some not. As a child Chris had lived with church friends when there was a need and she extended this kindness to others.
Chris also had a passion for travel. Her trips took her to Europe, Egypt, Israel, and Mexico. But she could never get enough of her beloved Hawaii and returned there several times.
Chris and Lowell were active at Twin Lakes Church. They were sponsors in the college department, served for years on the missions committee and sang in the choir.Chris also served several years as a deaconess. She used her gift of compassionby visiting church members who could no longer get out and comforting those whohad recently lost a loved one.
Chris loved Jesus and spent time with Him daily. She took her prayer life seriously and had a well worn list of all those sheheld up in prayer tucked in the front of her Bible.
Chris was preceded in death by Lowell and her brothers Aubrey Cheek of Washington and Robert Cheek of Texas. She leaves behind her children Phillip [Jennifer] Welty, Sara [Steve] Payne, Kathleen [John] Patton, and Mark [Diane] Welty, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Her last year and a half she spent happily at Dominican OaksRetirement Community. She died peacefully at Dominican Hospital surrounded by family.
