Before 1189, Sir Henry Bayntun was said to have been a Knight of St John of Jerusalem and held the office of Knight Marshal of the Household to King Henry II - which was a post of great trust and authority in those days. However he is unlikely to have been a Knight of St. John, as being a member of the Order entailed taking the monastic vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and therefore could not have married and produced sons. But it's possible he might have been admitted after his wife's death. The Knight Marshal was an officer whose duties seem to vary over the centuries, but in Henry II's time, was probably the Chief Officer of Arms and possibly charged with the arrangement of ceremonies and conduct of operations, etc. During his reign he took part with the Earl of Northumberland, and as a result, was beheaded at Berwick. His second son, Henry, was also a Knight of St. John of Jerusalem and was slain in Brittany (Bretagne, France) in 1201. Sir Henry is mentioned on a memorial stone erected in 1716 for John Bayntun at the Church of St. Nicholas in Bromham. The inscription indicates that John Bayntun was the 19th in lineal descent to Sir Henry Bayntun, Knight Marshal to King Henry II. http://www.bayntun-history.com
