Survived an attack by Indians at the Battle of Bloody Brook. His father and three brothers were killed in that fight. The Battle of Bloody Brook was fought on September 18, 1675 between English colonial militia from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and a band of Indians led by the Nipmuc sachem Muttawmp. The Indians ambushed colonists escorting a train of wagons carrying the harvest from Deerfield to Hadley during King Philip's War. They killed at least 40 militia men and 17 teamsters out of a company that included 79 militia. Ephraim was the youngest son of those who went to Deerfield. In the vital records of marriages and births there were other children who apparently stayed behind in Dedham/Medfield area, including a son named Gamaliel, and maybe a daughter or two. After Bloody Brook, where Robert and three sons died, there were only two original Hinsdale brothers left in Deerfield, Ephraim and Experience. Experience was killed the next year at the Falls Fight, so young Ephraim was left alone. He married Mehitable Plympton, they moved away to Hatfield, and sadly Ephraim died young shortly thereafter. Mehitable and children moved back to Medfield, likely to be with their relatives there. It' s a very sad story, out of many sad stories and events of the time.
