Ermengarde of Burgundy, born c. 893-905 and died c. 945-956, is the daughter of the Duke of Burgundy Richard the Justice. She is the third Duchess of Burgundy after her mother and sister-in-law. Origins and ancestry Ermengarde of Burgundy belongs to the dynasty of Bosonids (Bivinides). She is the daughter of Richard of Burgundy (868-921), first Duke of Burgundy and Adelaide of Burgundy (v.870-929), Countess of Auxerre. She has for brothers and sister: Raoul (v.890-936), second duke of Burgundy then king of the Franks; Hugues (891-952), Count of Beyond Saone (Auxonne) (923-952), of Mâcon (927-952), Marquis of Provence (936-952) and Duke of Burgundy (938-943); Boson (895-935), lay priest of Saint-Pierre de Moyenmoutier and Saint-Mont de Remiremont; Alix, married to Reinier (? -931), count of Hainaut. Marriage and descent Ermengarde of Burgundy, then countess of Autun (921-v.945), married in 928 Gilbert de Vergy († 956), then count of Chalon, Beaune and Dijon. They have two known children: Adelaide or Wera de Chalon (930/9351 ~ 987), Countess of Chalon and Beaune, lady of Werre and Donzy. She marries : (1) before 950, Robert I of Vermandois († after June 19, 966) Count of Meaux, son of Heribbert II Count of Vermandois and his wife Adela (Capetian); (2) in 955 towards Easter, Otto of Burgundy (~ 945-22 or 23 Feb. 965), son of Hugh the Great and Count of Auxerre at the time of his marriage; he succeeded Gilbert as Duke of Burgundy in 960. In 958 Rodolphe de Dijon captured the castle of Beaune, where King Lothaire installed Otton in 956, and kidnapped Adelaïs; but Otton reconquers the castle to the calends of May. Bouchard asserts that Count Rodolphe marries Adelaïs but does not provide proof; however, the Chronicon of Odorannus de Sens suggests that Adelis co-infected Otton with Rodolphe (without specifying whether the act is voluntary or forced). Luitgarde. She marries: (1) in 955, Lambert de Chalon († 22 Feb. 979), count of Chalon and Autun1. (2) March 2 or 9, 979 (she is his second wife) Geoffroy I Grisegonelle († July 21, 987), Earl of Anjou, son of Foulques II Earl of Anjou and his first wife Gerberge (Gerberge de Maine ?) 1. Ingeltrude (v.910-v.960), married to Robert, viscount of Dijon Kingdom When he reached the throne of France in 923, Ermengarde's brother of Burgundy, Raoul, preferred to entrust the duchy of Burgundy to his former lieutenant, Gilbert de Chalon, who became his brother-in-law five years later, rather than 'to his own younger brother, Hugues. By marriage to Gilbert de Chalon in 928, Ermengarde of Burgundy became, besides Countess de Chalon, Beaune and Dijon, the third Duchess of Burgundy. In 936, his brother Hugues and Hugh the Great (898-856), then Count of Paris, Marquis of Neustria, and Duke of the Franks, both contest the decision of King Raoul and claim the Duchy of Burgundy. In 938, a treaty signed at Langres divides it into three equal parts respectively attributed to Gilbert de Chalon, Hugues de Bourgogne le Noir and Hugues le Grand. Each beneficiary then takes the title of Duke of Burgundy. Ermengarde of Burgundy remains duchess but reigns, with her husband, on a reduced territory; Hedwig de Saxe (922-965), daughter of Henry I the Oiseleur, emperor of the West and wife of Hugh the Great, takes the ducal title. Hugues le Noir is not married, so there are only two duchesses. This division ended in 943 by decision of Louis IV Outremer, king of the Franks, who entrusts the full rights to the duchy of Burgundy to Hugh the Great, and gives Hugh the Black and Gilbert de Chalon the title of chief count of Burgundy. From then on, they continue to enjoy the share that had been allocated to them but become vassals of the duke. Ermengarde of Burgundy dies around 945. Titles Ermengarde of Burgundy is titled Countess of Autun (921-v.945) then, after his marriage in 928, Countess of Chalon, Beaune and Dijon (928-v.945), Duchess of Burgundy (928-943). After the loss of the ducal title in 943, chief countess of Burgundy (943-v.945) Notes and references ↑ a, b, c, d and e (en) Charles Cawley, "Gilbert de Chalon" [archive], in "Burgundy duchy - Dukes of Burgundy," ch. 2: "Dukes of Burgundy [918] -956", section B: "Duke of Burgundy 936-956", on Medlands [archive] (accessed November 16, 2017).
