Source: I have been unable to determine the exact name of the book that this biography came from. When asked where he found it, my gr-uncle wrote that it was in an old book that his sister had and that the name was spelled "Hienz" rather than "Heinz". My uncle corrected the spelling on the copy he sent me.(Sherri Hessick) Jacob Heinz, one of the pioneer settlers of Cook County, now residing in Niles Center, was born in Kriesfeldt, Bavaria, on the Rhine, September 14, 1812, and is a son of George Heinz, who was born inKalhofen, Bavaria, in the same locality, in 1789, and was a carpenter by trade. Jacob arrived in USA in New York. He immediately went to work for the government as a carpenter on the arsenal in Mt. Vernon, Florida (which I can not find on a map. I can only find "Vernon"). The father of our subject was twice drafted to serve as a soldier under Napoleon Bonaparte, but on account of physical disability was not accepted. He married Fredericka Richt, who was also born in Kriesfeldt, in 1793, and was a daughter of Anton Richt, a mason by trade and a native of Austria. Early in life Jacob Heinz learned the carpenter’s trade under the direction of his father and followed that business in the land of his birth until 1837, when he determined to seek a home and fortune in the New World. In February of that year he took passage on a westward-bound sailing vessel and on the 15th of April landed in New York. This voyage seemed an omen of future success for they started three weeks after two other vessels, and reached port sooner than either. While there he had the misfortune to lose some valuable papers and records, which he has ever regretted. Mr. Heinz remainedin New York until the autumn of 1837, when he went to Florida, and was employed by the Government to work on the United States arsenal at Mt. Vernon, and to that labor devoted his energies for several years. Others, on account of the unhealthful climate, abandoned the work, but our subject was the last to leave it. He then came, by way of New Orleans and St. Louis, to Chicago, arriving in this city in April, 1843. The following year he decided to cast in his lot with the tillers of the soil on the broad prairies of Illinois, and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of state land in the townof Maine, Cook County. With untiring energy and ambition Mr. Heinz began the work of making for himself a competence, and richly has he been rewarded, and he still enjoys good health. On the 13th of June, 1844, our subject wedded Miss Christine Schwartz, daughter of Peter Schwartz, a cooper by trade, and a native of Darmstadt, Germany. The lady was born in Stadeke, Darmstadt, in 1824. Mr. and Mrs. Heinz had a family of twelve children, eight of whom are yet living. Jacob, born July 20, 1845, makes farming his life work. He has a family of six children and resides in Evanston, Illinois. Helena, born January 19, 1847, is the wife of Peter Blameuser, a farmer and florist of Niles Center. They have seven children. Martin, born November 14, 1848, lives in Niles Center and is extensively engaged in the butchering business. He has a family of six children. Mary, born August 13, 1851, is the widow of Mathias Kannen, and lives in Chicago. Margaret, born September 24, 1854, is the widow of Louis Luebbers, and resides in Niles Center. George, born February 9, 1858, is engaged in farming on the old homestead in Maine Township. He has four children. Anna Louisa, born April 10, 1863, is the wife of William Webber of Chicago, Clerk of the Probate Court, by whom she has three children. Henry, born June 4, 1866, carries on a meat-market at Niles Center. He has one child. In June, 1894, Mr. and Mrs. Heinz celebrated their golden wedding, which was attended by their thirty-nine descendants, including one great grandchild. Mr. Heinz and his family have all been reared in the Catholic Church, and are now members of St. Peter’s Church of Niles Center. In his political views he is a Democrat and was elected Town Supervisor for one term, but since then has never sought political preferment, giving as his reason that “a man cannot well be a politician and be honest.” Mr. Heinz was thrown upon his own resources while very young, but by industry, perseverance and careful attention to the details of his business he steadily worked his way upward and became a well-to-do farmer. For several years past he has lived retired, making his home in a commodious two-story brick residence in Niles Center. He has long resided in this community, has become widely known, and has many warm friends throughout the county.
