Graber & Spiesen Parish Records. !Alias: Johann Nicholaus. !Occupation: farmer. !Notes: From "A History of the Greber / Graeber / Graber Family 1680 - 1980" compiled by Kathleen Neuman Graber 1981: Johann Nicholaus Greber, the sonof Johann Nickel Greber and Maria Johanna nee Werth, was married in the late 1780's to Susanna Ruffing of Spiesen. Susanna was born in Spiesen in 1768. The name Ruffing appears in the Spiesen records as early as 1730, spelled Rouffin or Ruffin, a French name. P: Johann Nicholaus was a farmer. The births ofnine children born to Johann Nicholaus and Susanna were recorded in th birth register of the Catholic Church in Spiesen. These records were filmed by the Genealogical Society of the Latter Day Saints of Salt Lake City, Utah, and areavailable on microfilm to the public.... P: Much of this information was confirmed by Rev. John J. Greber of Austria in his letter to Salome Engles Graber, a copy of which has been included in this book(title above). Johannn Nicholaus died in Spiesen 20 January 1844 at the age of about 80 years, providingthe approximate date of birth. His death followed by only ten days the deathof his son, Johannes, who died 10 January of the same year, at the age of 53 years, which provides us with the approximate year of his birth -- 1791. Susanna Ruffing Greber preceded them both in death, 11 January 1837 at the age of 69 years. P: IMPORTANT MESSAGE: The parentage of Johann Nicholaus Greber, born 1764, has not been definitly established, though I (K, N. Graber) have indicated here that his parents were Johann Nickel Greber, born about 1737, and Maria Johanna nee Werth. The first recorded mention of Johann Nicholaus Greberwas in the records of the Catholic Church of Spiesen, Prussia (should read Preussen), with the recording of his fourth child, Johann Adam Greber, 30 April 1800. There were three children born before Johann Adam but the church recordsdidn't begin until 1799....
