¦The Weber family hailed from Bierbach, Germany and brought their skill of basketmaking from the old country to America, along with many of their other distant relatives. A number of Bierbachers settled in Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y. ¦The immigrant of this family, Johann Jacob Weber, had 8 children with his wife Gertrud Rechin and 41 grandchildren, including 35 born with the Weber name. Family Lore says: The Weber's came from Alsace-Lorraine on the French-German border. True or no?: This does not appear to be true. It's proven through records that they came from the town of Bierbach in the Saar region of southwest Germany, and that they lived in this town since at least the 1600's. Their origin is not certain before Bierbach, but as far as records can tell us, the Alsace-Lorraine bit was simply untrue. Bierbach is, however, not far from the Alsace-Lorraine region and the French border, so perhaps older relatives just used it as a marker to pinpoint their place of origin.
