James Clifton, son of Thomas Clifton of Westby, Lancashire, probably came to Virginia under the auspices of another Catholic, George Brent, as he appears as a "head right" in a land grant to Brent in 1677. In this grant, which is near the present Alexandria, it is stated to adjoin another to James Clifton. James Clifton returned to England before 1679 and died there in 1714. James Clifton b. ca 1636, Westby, Lancashire, England. He married ca 1661 Ann Brent, daughter of George Brent and Marianna Peyton. she was born ca. 1640. James was in St. Mary's Co., Maryland 12 Oct 1663 (see Land Notes Vol. 5, MD Historical Magazine, p. 263) with cousins Margaret and Mary Brent. In 1669 he was in Stafford Co., Virginia and was called son of Thomas Clifton, Esq. of Westby and Clifton, Lancashire, England. The land of James Clifton and George Brent joined and was near the present city of Alexandria, VA. James Clifton returned to his home in England before 1679 and died there in 1714. His will, dated 6 Jan 1714 leaves his estate to nephew Thomas Clifton, daughter Catherine and nephew George. children: Cuthbert Clifton, m.
