Allen, Ethan ------------------- Ethan Allen, American Revolutionary soldier and frontiersman, was bornin Litchfield, Connecticut, on January 10, 1738, and moved in 1769 toVermont, a territory then claimed by both New Hampshire and New York.He became leader of the Green Mountain Boys, a military force ofVermonters who fought against New York to protect their landholdings.When the American Revolution broke out, Allen's Green Mountain Boyshelped to capture (May 10, 1775) Fort TICONDEROGA from the British.On September 25, 1775, during the invasion of Canada, he was takenprisoner. After his release (May 6, 1778) Allen received the brevetrank of colonel in the Continental Army, but he did not serve. Uponreturning to Vermont, he was given command of the militia with therank of major general. Vermont, although not recognized as independent by the ContinentalCongress, had declared itself a separate republic in 1777. Allen,along with his brother Ira (1751-1814), entered into negotiations withthe British from 1779 on to obtain a guarantee of Vermont'sindependence. After the Treaty of Paris (1783), which ended the war,he continued to resist New York's claims. He did not live to seeVermont become a state. He died in Burlington on February 12, 1789.
