Biography by Professor Joseph M. Kellogg Barbara Teter was born probably about 1783. She married JosephWalker. Her marriage bond is dated July 18, 1800 and the consent ofMoses Henkel as her guardian is given. (She is also said by somedescendants to have married William Rutherford. [Barbara Teter d/oGeorge s/o Paul married William Rutherford.] Possibly this was asecond marriage). Joseph Walker appears on the Pendleton tax lists for 1803 and until1809 (inclusive) but not in 1819 or thereafter. He and his wiferemoved about that time to Randolph County Joseph Walker was granteda patent for 105 acres in Randolph County November 1, 1817. (Va. Landpatent books). He also bought, for $65, from Edmund Wyat and wifeMary of Randolph County, 75 acres on the headwaters of Seneca Creek inPendleton County, June 5, 1819. Recorded September 1, 1819. He issaid to be of Randolph County (from Pendleton County Deed book #7,page 307). Many years later, on August 18, 1843, Joseph Walker andwife Barbara of Randolph County deed this 75 acre tract, as well astwo other tracts, of 55 acres and 48 acres, both on the east side ofthe Allegheny Mountains and adjoining his other land, for a nominalconsideration of one dollar to Andrew W. Dyer, Jonas Hedrick andSolomon Hedrick. Recorded December 26, 1843. (Pendleton County Deedbook 14, page 59) Joseph Walker was probably a son of George Walker, who lived near theTeters on the North Fork. The will of George Walker was dated April17, 1810 and recorded October 2, 1810. In it he mentions only hiswife Sarah, son John, daughter Phoebe, also son William and daughterElizabeth both of whom were apparently incapable. The will waswitnessed by James and William Cunningham and Richard Pennington.(Pendleton County Will Book 3, page 115) Signatures from receipts in original papers of the estate of MatthiasMiller, dated 1792-94. [omitted] Probably Joseph and Barbara Walker had children, but their names arenot known. Joseph Walker married, in Lewis County, Mary Flesher, daughter of AdamFlesher. Bond dated February 12, 1834. William Walker married, in Lewis County, Mary Bent (daughter of LydiaBell). Bond dated January 4, 1837. Both these young women were related to the Teters by marriage, so itmay well be that these young men were children of Joseph and BarbaraWalker. Death Date Discrepancy October 23, 1850 and October 29, 1850 are listed as death dates forBarbara Walker nee Teter. The discrepancy seems to come from readingthe inscription on her tombstone. I visited North Walker Cemetery onMarch 26, 2004, and examined the headstone, photographed it andbelieve the inscription to be: "Barbara, wife of Joseph Walker, diedOctober 29, 1850, aged 68 years 11 months and 7 days."
