(History of ) Ralls County Missouri, Goldena Roland Howard, 1980, pg.? CAROLYN ALMIRA Fitchen Whaley was born 25 March 1879 at Spalding. Her100th birthday was observed on the exact anniversary of her birth, 25March 1979, at First Christian Church in Hannibal. Her immediatefamily, which numbered more than a hundred, sat in a special sectionwith her at morning worship; her favorite hymns and passages ofscripture were used in the service. A reception was held in the church fellowship hall in the afternoonwith her youngest child, attorney William Harold Whaley of Tulsa,Oklahoma, as master of ceremonies. Her pastor and assistant pastor andthe chaplain from Luther Manor Nursing Home, where she now stays, brought brief greetings. A son and daughter-in-law of a family wholived on the adjoining farm all of her married life, Mr. and Mrs.Willie Foreman, sang. She attended Spalding school and SpaldingChristian Church where her brother served on the official board, andothers went regularly. One of her beaux, Will Whaley, decided againstfarming and learned to be a barber. In those years Arkansas was highlyadvertised as the place to make a fortune, so he went to Arkedelphiaand plied his trade. Letters were exchanged frequently and they hadtheir pictures made for each other. After he received her picture itis reported that Will tired of barbering. He claimed to have snippedtwo ears on the same man just thinking about her. One March 20, 1901she married William Nichols Whaley at the Spalding Springs Hotel. Theylived on the Whaley farm north of Spalding and had seven children whoare listed in the family record section. The farm was large andprosperous, Mr. and Mrs. Whaley were excellent managers, the distaffside of the enterprise being as difficult as the grain and livestockbusiness. Will's brother, Charlie, lived with them many years. Thehouse was a large antebellum brick, with a frame ell, designed forcomfortable living for a large household. It had been built for JohnForeman (around 1839). The large dining room (table)had 18 chairs andoften were filled, for there were farmhands to feed. The kitchen hadbeen planned for quantity cookery, and one had to move across threelevels and open three doors to get the food to the dining room, butthere was always help with daughters and sons at hand. The kitchen andicehouse with cellar beneath was divided from the main part of thehouse by a wide long hall in which hands lounged and mended harness, etc., in bad weather. Eventually, a combined shop and club house was built for the men andfarm workers. The icehouse was designed so that the melting icedripped down through the cellar ceiling and then drained away from thestone floor, keeping the cellar at a low temperature all summer. Mrs.Whaley was interested in educational and community affairs, and washead of the women's group at the church. Her husband died19 Nov1934,and she continued to live on the farm until 1949 when she moved to asmaller house in Oakwood. In 1972, at the age of 93, Mrs. Whaley movedto Luther Manor. She attended church in Hannibal after moving toOakwood, and continued until about 1977, when she decided it best toattend at the Manor. She says Willie and Ruth Foreman are the bestsingers; and that Lawrence Welk has the best program on TV, althoughshe watches and enjoys many others. After she reached 100 years sheremarked, "I must be getting better looking - at least people come outand take my picture a lot more often." At her 100th birthday party shegreeted each Guest personally and she said to one, "I have alwaysloved you, and every one of your family." She was told, "Oh, I thinkyou have always just loved everyone." She chuckled, "if you want toaccuse me of that . . . I'm guilty!"
