Obituary; Saturday, Dec. 8, 1928 Fergus Falls Daily Journal Mrs. Peter Tomhave whose death was announced in yesterday's paper wasone of the pioneers of this vicinity, having come here in 1872. Shewas a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ladwig and was born in Pomerania,Germany, January 23, 1861. In 1865 her parents emigrated to America, making the voyage on a sailboat and spending seven weeks on the ocean. The family landed inQuebec, Canada and from there made their way to Watertown, Wisconsinwhere they first settled. In 1872 the Ladwig family together with theDrager, Schroeder, Thom, and Duenow families decided to move to thisvicinity. They made the trip together up here by ox teams. Mrs.Tomhave was then about 11 years old. The Ladwig family bought land inElizabeth township near Jewett Lake and had its home there for manyyears. In 1873 Rev. Winkler became the first German Lutheran pastor in thisvicinity. On April 4, 1874, he held his first confirmation services inthis city. Mrs. Tomhave was a member of this class. She was united inmarriage with Mr. Peter Tomhave on November 8, 1877, and since thenhad made her home on her husband's farm in Fergus Falls township, 21/2miles west of this city. Their marriage was blessed with 10 sons andone daughter, of whom 2 sons, Emil and Herbert, died in their earlychildhood. On May 1, 1901 Mr. Peter Tomhave also died. Thus the dutyto bring up a large family rested mostly on her and her lot in lifewas not an easy one. Mrs. Tomhave enjoyed good health until last summer. Then she began tofail, but her condition did not become serious until about 5 weeksago. An operation was then found necessary which according to allappearances was successful. She seemed to be on the road to recoveryand left the hospital last Saturday and went to the home of her son,Lewis F. Tomhave on Spruce street with the intention of staying therefor some time in order to gain strength. On Friday morning at about6:30 she was stricken with heart trouble and passed away one-half hourlater. She was nearly 68 years old. She is survived by one daughter,Mrs. Minnie Rademacher of St. Paul; and eight sons, John F. Tomhave ofFergus Falls township; Wm. H. of Chicago; Lewis F. of this city; Fredof Dent; Geo. A. at home; Aug. A. of Underwood; Arthur of Newark,Delaware; Walter of this city. There are 13 grand children. Her fivebrothers and one sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Peter Tomhave was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church ofthis city for over fifty years. Funeral services will be held onMonday afternoon at 1:30 at the residence of her son, Lewis F.Tomhave, 544 Spruce street, and at 2:00 at the Trinity LutheranChurch, Rev. Friedrich officiating, and burial will be made on thefamily lot in the church cemetery.
