In 1652 he planted 500 acres on the Potomac and 5000 acres in York County, Virginia, which he named Essex Lodge, now called Washington Lodge, being headquarters of General George Washington. Other versions: Captain Thomas Hill was born in England in 1612 and came to America with his family. Thomas was captain of the York County, Virginia militia. He was elected Burgess in 1641. In 1652 he planted 500 acres on the Potomac and 5000 acres in York County, Virginia. He named them Essex Lodge, since called Washington Lodge being the headquarters of General George Washington. In 1632 Captain Thomas Hill married Mary Piersey, daughter of Abraham Piersey and Elizabeth Draper, born 1613. Captain Hill died in York County, Virginia in 1659. Elizabeth Draper Hill died at Esssex Lodge in 1679. Children of Thomas Hill and Mary Piersey were: John Hill born 1633; Thomas Hill born October 6, 1634; Lydia Hill born August 1635; George Hill born June 18, 1637; Elizabeth Hill born May 14, 1638; Mary Hill born November 16, 1640 and Frances Hill born 1641. All of their children were born in York County, Virginia. Capt. Thomas Hill, son of Edward Hill and Mary Boyle, was born in England in 1612. He was a captain of the York County, Virginia militia. Thomas was elected as Burgess in 1641. In 1652 he patented 500 acres on the Potomac and 5,000 acres in York County, Virginia which he named "Essex Lodge", later called Washington Lodge, being headquarters of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. In 1632 Captain Hill married Mary Piersey, daughter of Abraham Piersey and Elizabeth Draper, born 1613. Capt. Thomas Hill died in York County, Virginia in 1659. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Draper Hill married Col. Thomas Bushrod. She died at Essex Lodge in 1679. The children of Captain Thomas Hill and Mary Piersey: 1. John Hill b. 1633 in York County, Virginia and died 1687. 2. Thomas Hill b. 6 October 1634 in York County, Virginia married Frances (Unknown). 3. Lydia Hill b. August 1635 in York County, Virginia. 4. George Hill b. 18 June 1637 in York County, Virginia. 5. Elizabeth Hill b. 14 May 1638 in York County, Virginia. Married Col. John Scarsbrook. 6. Mary Hill b. 16 November 1640 in York County, Virginia. 7. Frances Hill b. 2 October 1641 in York County. Virginia.
