Family emigrated from Kassel, Russia. From Russia, they went to Hamburg, Germany, by train which took about 3 days. At Hamburg, they took an ocean liner to New York, which took about 15 days. They arrived in New York December 2, 1884. At New York, they were placed on a train for a three day trip to Menno, South Dakota, arriving on December 19, 1884. Records show that the only thing they brought with them was clothing. The family stayed in Menno for 4 years. In June of 1889 the family moved from Menno to Logan County, North Dakota by ox team. The area that they decided to live in was uninhabited (Twp 133 Range 68). The town was later named after George Lautt (Lautt Township). When they first got t this area, they lived in their wagons Their first home was at Section 28 Township 133 Range 68, built in 1889. It was a three room sod house which measured 20' x 36' with 1 door and 6 windows. They lived in that house for 9 years. The family shopped at Edgeley, North Dakota. They heated with a cast iron stove and bured wood and hay. They got their first water from a pond but dug a well i July of 1889. They planted their first crops of flax in the spring of 1890. Tha summer, they collected buffalo bone and sold it at Edgeley for $2.00 a wagon load. That fall they sold their flax at Kulm, North Dakota for about $1 a bushel. George Lautt donated land for a school which was built in 1892. The school was 16' x 26' and heated with coal.
