Mary Prowse was born circa 1504 in England. She was the daughter of Thomas Prowse of Sandford and Joan Baynton. She brought, by a marriage settlement, to her husband John Gye, lands called "Upcott" in Cherlton Fitzpaine, near Poughill in 1509.3 She married John Gye, son of John Gye and Elizabeth Spencer, in 1509 in Devon, England; Married as a child. She and John Gye claimed the lands of Thomas Prowse in Poughill, Dodderidge, Ilsington, and elsewhere, in 1516 in Devon, England. She of full age in 1520. She brought to her husband the manors of Poughill and Doddridge in Sandford, with other lands as well, in Devon, England. She was the heir general of Upcot in Cheriton Fitzpain, which had once belonged to her great-uncle, Nicholas Radford, the noted judge who was murdered in 1455, in Devon, England.
