KUEHL
The death of Peter Martin Kuehl occurred a few days ago at his home near D
ixon, Jolo County, California. He had been a man of much experience andw
as well respected. He was born at Barbeck, Probstei, Holstein in 1820. Th
ere he followed his father's trade of cooper until forced to join the ar
my of Germany. In 1849 he came to Davenport where he worked for the forme
rly well known firm of Burrows & Prettyman. From Davenport in the spri
ng of 1850 hewent to California, where he dug for gold with but little su
ccess for threeyears. He rode all the way back with three saddle compani
ons and after another year in Davenport he bought a farm in Lincoln townsh
ip which he worked until 1857. The he went to Pike's Peak, again to se
ek for gold. He soon returned. In 1864 he went to California with his fa
mily and farmed there until hisdeath. He is survived by three sons and o
ne daughter and by a brother, Henry Kuehl of Gilbertown, the last of sev
en children. Mr. Kuehl's wife died 35years ago.
