Clare Brockman was born in Selby, South Dakota, on June 1, 1910. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Brockman and he had one sister, Florence. After Clare’s first birthday, they moved from Selby to Redfield where he was raised. He went to the local public schools and graduated from Redfield High School and then attended the Redfield College.
Clare entered active service in April of 1941. He was first trained at Camp Claibourne, Louisiana. When he came out of training, he was promoted to Corporal in an artillery company. Upon moving to Ft. Dix, New Jersey, he was assigned to the Pioneer Company of the 634 Tank Destroyer Battalion.
Private Clare Brockman came to his death after being struck by a taxicab while crossing a street at Fort Dix on May 6, 1942. His remains were returned to Redfield for burial in the St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
