Ocala - Mr. Ralph D. Kreischer, 83, of Ocala, passed away Friday, February 01, 2013, at Sylvia's Hospice House. A native of Elkhart, Indiana, he proudly served his country in the Korean War, with the U.S. Army, in the Chorwon Area, as a corporal and infantry mortarman assigned to Co A, 1st Bn, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. In 1957 he and his family moved to Ocala, coming here from Union, Michigan. Ralph originally came to Ocala to assume the position of a divisional General Manager of Skyline Mobile Homes. He will best be remembered as one of the premier builders in Marion County, where he was a highly respected builder and developer for over 40 years. His demand for quality was evident in all of his projects. He also was a former partner in Manning Building Supplies. Ralph loved to play golf, basketball and travel, but his greatest joy was his family. He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he remained an active member until his health prevented his attendance. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ruth; daughters, Susan Thomas (John), Fruitland Park; Teri Wallace (Rick), Ocala; Janet Kreischer (Anthony Rue), Gainesville; and his four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his three sisters and one brother. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2013 at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 910 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4001 NE 25th Avenue, Ocala, with Pastor Myron Mader officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Park, 1515 NE 3rd Street, Ocala. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. Korean War, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army The 9th Infantry Regiment maintained an average strength of about 3,400 soldiers from 7 Aug 1950 to 20 Jul 1953. The regiment suffered 2,001 Killed In Action (KIA) during this period. This is an extremely high number for a unit of this size. The regiment earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its gallant service at Hongchon, and six of its members received the Medal of Honor. It was considered to be the finest regiment of the U.S. Army during the war. They were know for fierce fighting ability, high morale, and next to zero disciplinary problems. The 9th were called the "Manchu troops" and were the first of the 2nd Infantry Division to engage North Korean forces, at Yongsan in August 1950, against a numerically superior force. They were later successful at Bloody Ridge, Heartbreak Ridge, Old Baldy, Pork Chop Hill, and T-Bone Hill.ing the tremendous casualties the regiment had sustained at the outset. I believe Ralph served as an infantry mortarman, based on my recollection of our last conversation (William Borneman, 22 Sep 2018).
