Brooklawn was founded in 1851 as the German Protestant
Orphan's Asylum by the Reverend Karl Daubert, pastor of
St. Paul's Evangelical Church. The orphanage was originally
located on W Jefferson Street, between Nineteenth and
Twentieth Streets. The first orphans cared for by the Reverend
Louis Daubert were children whose German-immigrant parents
had died en route to Louisville during a yellow fever epidemic.

American, ca 1898-1900. A presentation cane with gold knob, presented by the Aurora Lodge of Louisville to Christian G. Leonhardt on his 68th birthday, and a similar cane made as a gift to Leonhardt's wife Katharina. Longest: 36.5 in.
Christian Leonhardt and his wife Katharina were house parents to the German Protestant Orphan Asylum in Louisville (later Brooklawn) from 1869-84. Accompanying this lot is the book A Home for Children-A History of Brooklawn (1851-2001) by Terry L. White. (EST $500-$700)
