Citizen and Mercer of London. Of an ancient family of Leicestershire. --- Ambrose Smith of Withcote and of the City of London, Citizen & Mercer, fourth son. Purchased Withcote of his brother Roger Smith. Nuncupative will dated 20 Jun 1584 & proved 23 same month. Died 27 Jul 1584. Buried at Withcote aforesaid, M.I. Ambrose married Joane Coo, daughter of John Coo. Joane, daur of John Coo of Goggeshall co: Essex. Born there. Died 21-30 April 1601. Will dated 21 April 1601 proved 2 May following (28 Woodhall P.C.C --- Was Master of the Mercers Company in 1581. --- The fourth son of John HERRICE alias SMITH is given as Ambrose SMITH, who married "Johanna, dau. of Jon Coe, of Coxall, Essex." Dorothy SMITH, daughter of Ambrose and Johanna, married Benedict BARNHAM, and among theirdaughters was Alice BARNHAM, who married Sir Francis BACON.
