James Ira joined the same regiment as Tully where he served untilhis capture during the battle of Franklin Tennessee. After beingcaptured, James wound up in a prisoner of war camp (Camp Douglas) inIllinois. On aprial 11, 1865, two days after lee surrendered to Grant,James joined the 5th US Volunteer Infantry where he rose to the rank ofsergeant in just over a month. On October 8, 1865 James deserted at FortRiley in Kansas. Family history states that James lived "out west" forseveral years until he returned to SC. (Preston Holliday) On one occasion while traveling through a blizzard through the West,Holliday's partner gave out--exhausted. While stopped his feet froze.Holliday was not a big man but a strong person. He lifted his partner onhis baack and trudged along through the deep snow, aiming for a cabin heknew to be a far distance away. It seems they had to cross a river bywading which was necessary, they finnally reached the cabin which wasinhabited at that time. It seems that by this time, the story goes, thatboth of them had frozen feet. The people were receptive of them, andthey stayed quite some time recovering before continuing their journeywestward. Jim Holliday was involved in many enterprises during these years. At one time he he carried mail by Pony Express which was adventurous anddangerous. He once rode with William Bill Cody (Buffalo Bill) and JamesButler Hickok (Wild Bill Hickok) working for the railroad company goingahead scouting for Indians. They had several encounters with Indians, and several local settlers who objected to having the railroad beingbuilt through their property. Another successful enterprise he became involved in with a partnerwas gold mining. This lasted for some time. Later he decided to comeback South for a visit to his parents. His partner continued to operatethe mine, and he put Jim's share of the receipts in a Wells Farge Bank. While home, Jim met a lovely lady, fell in love, and was married. Heremained in the South. We don't know what became of the goldmine or thepartner. This information was supplied by Corrie Evans Maloney of SutterCreek, Ca. The storyteller was Relton Vissage of Crystal Lake, SC. Hemarried Ann Evans, Corrie's sister. Corrie and Ann were daughters ofJohn and Minnie Holliday Evans. Minnie was a sister of FletcherHolliday.
