Marion Calhoun Stephens, born Feb. 29, 1892, was a man of noble characterand rock steady wisdom. He was a gentle, loving husband, father andgrandfather. He lived in the Pleasant Hill Community, (in Six Mile, SC),where the family attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and farmed tosupplement their income. Mr. Stephens was known throughout the neighboring community for his artof making delicious molasses. The molasses was made from the juice (sap)which was pressed from the cane and boiled. The molasses was used incandy, canned fruits, etc., but a favorite dish of the family was hotbiscuits and butter eaten with the molasses. He also worked at Alexander's corn mill in Six Mile, making corn meal, grits and products for the farm livestock. The corn meal was made bygrinding the kernels of corn which was used for making cornbread andother baked goods. The family has a treasured picture of Mr. & Mrs. Stephens. This pictureis of them sitting together on a buggy pulled by a horse and grandmotherwas wearing a georgous hat with a feather on it. They are dressed intheir Sunday best. The neat thing about this picture is that they arenot married, but grandfather is actually courting my grandmother. Shewas 17 years old and grandfather was 20 years old. This would have beenmade around the year 1912. Submitted by Nora E. Stephens, wife of Wilton Stephens (son of MarionCalhoun Stephens) and Judi Stephens Moore (daughter of Wilton Stephens, & grandaughter ofMarion Calhoun Stephens)
