"Old Somerset of the Eastern Shore of Maryland" 1The tombstone over the grave of William Stevens states that he was 57years old at the time of his death, December 23, 1687. The record of thedeath and burial of Richard Stevens, April 22, 1667, given in SomersetCourt, Liber IKL, p. 241, states that said Richard Stevens was youngestson of John Stevens, of Llebourn [Lidbourne?], in the parish of Mealmore[Millmore?], County of Buckingham, England, and that said Richard Stevenswas brother of William Stevens, of Somerset County, and that he had diedApril 20th at the house of his said brother William, and was buried athis brother William's plantation, called "Rehoboth," in Somerset County,April 26, 1667. 2William Stevens seems to ha ve invariably signed his name: "Will:Stevens." In Northampton County (Virginia) records, Order Book,1656-1664, p. 206, we find one "Will: Stevens" as a member of a petitjury, February 15, 1664 [1664/5]. Jennings Wise, in his Ye Kingdome ofAccawmacke, or the History of the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the 17thCentury, pp. 111-112, confuses William Stevens, of Rehoboth, SomersetCounty, Maryland, with a certain Major Philip Stevens, a Cavalier refugeeto Virginia in 1649 with Col. Henry Norwood. The identity of "MajorStevens," the companion of Colonel Norwood, as being Major Philip Stevensis clearly proved by a statement in the William and Mary QuarterlyHistorical Magazine, Vol. XXIII, p. 53. 3VII Arcv. Md., pp. 5 and 7. 4XVArcv. Md., p. 260, October 7, 1679, "Then was Col William Stevens, Esqr, sworne one of his Lordshipps Privy Council." 5Andrews, TercentenaryHistory of Maryland, Vol. I, p. 324. 6Richardson, Sidelights on MarylandHistory, Vol. II, p. 175. William Stevens' tombstone states that he was"one of ye Deputy Lieutenants of this Province of Maryland" (see ante, p.329). 7V Arcv. Md., pp. 309-3 10 (Stevens as commander of horse inSomerset and Dorchester Counties). 550 William Lackey Stephens;http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/e/William-Lackey--Stephens/index.html
