Turkey George's house was built in 1890 just after his marriage inFebruary of that year. The barn was built a year or two later. All thelumber for the house and barn was sawed on a sash mill near the JessePalmer place. Turkey George got his nickname because he had built a pen, then duga hole under the side of it. He shelled corn and made a trail of it goinginto the pen. He studied the habits of turkeys and knew they would notcome out through the hole he dug, but they would try to escape by flyingup. He had closed in the top. He went home for the night. The nextmorning he returned to find eight or ten big, wild turkeys in his pen. Hedecided he would crawl in and grab one. He got it alright, but when hegrabbed one, all of the others fought him, beat him with their wings, andstomped on him as he made his escape back through the hole. He got hisbird. Everyone laughed about it as he told the story, including him. Hewas always called Turkey George after that. It is also said he was a great hunter and killed 105 bears, butonly one with dogs. This was on Hells Half Acre Branch near RobertPalmer's place. He said it climbed up a tree and I shot him in the legwith a pistol, he fell out and the dogs got him. He sullied and rolled uplike a cat. He contunied to shoot the bear. Then he scattered the dogs, and came close to catching me, as I kicked him in the chin. He ran upanother tree and I shoot him again he fell out. I finally followed him tothe branch, put the pistol against his head and fired. It numbed my handso bad, I had to loosen my fingers one at a time. George told Mr.Wilburn that he got so much bear meat that he started canning it andselling it for one dollar a jar.
