In 1900, Nancy was living in Lincolnton township in Lincoln County, NorthCarolina. In researching Nancy, I requested that William Doub Bennett, a Historicaland Genealogical REseracher, Lecturer, Author, and Publisher copy andsend to me her pension applications. The applications were based upon theCivil War service of Lewis S. VanDyke. On 18 July 1996, William wrote: "...it appears she was too young when she filed a pension in1910.Apparently the widow had to be sixty or sixty five years of age. I wouldsuggest that her signature on the second application was not signed byher but rather by Wade Lefler, Clerk of Court. The third application wasto get an increase in her pension payments by upgrading her statusbecause of her near total blindness." The following is a recap of her first pension application which is dated13 Sept 1910: (1) N. C. VanDyke age 55 resided at Gastonia (2) Lewis S. VanDyke enlisted in Co. H, 23 NC Regiment North CarolinaTroops on or about 20th day of April 1861. The 1910 application was not approved by the State of North Carolina. Theapplication does not explain why. Her second application was filed on May 2, 1935 when Nancy was 79 yearsold. The following comes from this application: (1) Her middle name was Katherine (2) She was living at Route 1, Newton, North Carolina (3) Lewis was not a deserter (4) They married on Jan. 13, 1884 (5) Lewis died on Oct. 20, 1899 (6) Her property whose tax valuation did not exceed $2,000 (7) She did not dispose of any property valued greater than $2,000 sinceMarch 11, 1885. Her signature on the second pension application does notmatch (not even close) to the signature on the 1910 pension application. Her third application or amendment was dated Sept 28, 1936 and onlyconsists of a signed statement by F. L. Herman, M.D. She is listed asbeing 81 and her physical condition is "...almost blind and totallydisabled and confined to the house. She has to be led to the table, andhas been unable to leave the house for more than 6 months, and then onlyby help." Her status was upgraded from a Class B pension to a Class Apension.
